What is Dexamethasone?
The world has seen some immensely tricky times since it came into existence.
But the brilliant minds on the face of this green earth, sooner or later, has always found a way to pave humanity’s way through the dark times.
Martin Luther King, Jr. said that “We must accept the finite disappointment but must never lose the infinite hope.”
This time when the world was rampaged by COVID-19 which put an end to lives of more than 430,000 human beings, the researchers from Oxford University, UK has found a drug, Dexamethasone, that has shown to be effective in reducing the deaths caused by COVID-19.
Uses of Dexamethasone :
Dexamethasone is a low-cost corticosteroid being used in treating many conditions. These conditions include rheumatic problems, skin diseases, severe allergies, asthma, and several other issues.
This particular drug was part of the earth’s primary trial testing treatments to see if they reduce the effect of coronavirus on an exposed patient.
Dexamethasone Effects and Side Effects:
The effect of this drug was most convincing among the seriously ill patients that were on ventilators. It reduced their risk of death by a third.
Patients that were receiving oxygen therapy also responded positively and their mortality rate, due to COVID-19, was reduced by a fifth.
It also has some side effects that can cause some problems such as:
- Muscle weakness
- Irritability and others.
But it has proved to be a lifesaver for COVID-19 patients, which is remarkable.
Dexamethasone tablet is available in various scales of milligrams.
This drug also comes in the form of a tablet which is white.
The tablet is round with oblique edges, and scored on one side. You can divide it into equal doses.
Dexamethasone injection is useful in the treatment of severe allergic reactions.
Apart from curing diseases, it is also used in diagnostic testing.
Dexamethasone in COVID-19 Patients:
As of now, the world was still using Actemra IV and Remdesivir to treat COVID-19 patients.
But with the introduction of this drug in COVID-19 patients, it has brought a new wave of hope for the world.
It is good news for all in despair due to this pandemic.
There are variations in this drug’s dosage.
But the researchers from Oxford University are yet to publish their research, on how much dosage of Dexamethasone must be inoculated in COVID-19 patient, publicly.
In the end, we must ask the question that “Are we seriously trying to find a cure or are we just trying to suppress it by proposing different drugs?”
